Chip Carving Lap Desk - Top
TOP - The top is 10" by 13". It has two grooves, spaced 10" apart, that line up with the two grooves in the base. These four grooves hold the two sides in place. The top and base have grooves along their front edges to fit over the front piece. All grooves are 3/16" deep, 31/64" wide for 1/2" plywood.

HOLES - To allow the chips to fall into the lap desk, I drilled six 1" diameter holes, spaced 1 1/2" on center, centered 3" up from the front edge. To keep from damaging the plywood, I ran a 1" Forstner bit into one side until the tip showed through, and then used the small hole to align the bit as I drilled in from the other side. Round-over the hole edges with a 1/4" round-over bit. Be careful that the bearing meets the work half way down the hole.
